Friday 31 March 2006
Just as Pat O'Beirne announced himself
as a quality player in our 2004 finals series, Antony
Barton has done likewise in 2006.
Barton (pictured) made 149 off 212 balls and 120 off
108 balls in his two finals appearances against Geelong
and Melbourne, which should go a long way towards securing
him selection in next season's Victorian Under-19 side.
University had a similar finals campaign to last season,
with the 1s bowing out to St Kilda, and the 2s and 4s
losing to Melbourne.
Again it is only MUCC curator Len Robbins who will be
in action on Grand Final weekend, with Uni Main being
used for the 1st XI showdown: a great honour for the
tireless Robbins.
Some compensation for 4th XI captain Hamish Bull was
his win with 19 points in the annual Scholars Cross
best player award.
Club coach Shawn Flegler, who is having
to leave to work in Sydney, was second with 18, Andy
Thomas and Nayan Sharma polled 17, and Alex Cairns,
who is off to Messingham in the Lincolnshire League,
got 16. Victorian rookie Nick Williams earned 15, and
Tim Newhouse, who will play for Hawarden in the North
Wales League, and Greg Kennedy polled 14.
It was a night when the club paid tribute to Matt
Berriman and former Victorian Dan Lowery,
who have been forced to retire with shoulder and hip
injuries respectively, Martyn Dobson, who came over
from Lincolnshire for the season, and Flegler.
The club also wished Cairns, Brett Murphy, Newhouse,
Dan Hibbert and Brett Harrop all the best for their
upcoming seasons in Britain.
