The former Queensland and Victorian interstate cricketer Shawn Flegler is to coach University this season.
Flegler, who has also played as a club professional and captain in England, Chile, Ireland, Canada and Scotland, has accepted a two-year contract, with an option for a third year.
Flegler (pictured bowling) announced that pre-season training
would start on Wednesday 18 August from 9 to 10pm at the
Victorian Cricket Centre, 13 Duerdin Street, Clayton North.
University Director of Cricket Charles Sutherland said that Flegler's cricket and life experiences were very well suited to Melbourne University. "He's a progressive and innovative cricket thinker and he understands student culture.
"Shawn's time under John Buchanan at Queensland University Cricket Club has been a major influence on his approach."
Buchanan says Flegler has an old head on still relatively young shoulders. "He is much wiser as a person and player due to the experiences he has lived through cricket," said Australia's coach.
"He has journeyed a path that will provide invaluable guidance for all players at the University club, and gives him a wonderful background to coaching."
Players learned of Flegler's appointment at the annual awards night where Leigh Murphy was named the most improved player and brother Marc Murphy received the Bill Tickner Award as the best first-year player.
Tim Grant was named best fielder and Rob Hamilton won the best clubman award.
Left-arm quick Hugh van Cuylenburg is to captain the 2s
next season, off-spinner Gareth Haeberle the 3s, and leg-spinner
Hamish Bull will lead the 4s.
The winners of the club's batting awards were Brendan Joseland, Greg Kennedy, Pat O'Beirne, Mark Bhattacharyya, Anthony Barton and Finn O'Sullivan.
Ashley Robertson, van Cuylenburg, Paul Smithwick, Hew Gerrard,
Tom Godsell and Marcus Goonan took the bowling honours.
