Sunday 8 January 2006
Uni has completed its long-overdue first sweep of the
season with nine players coming to the fore against
Northcote and South Yarra.
Prolific opener Pat O'Beirne (pictured), fresh from
organising the club’s annual lawn bowls day, completed
his second century of the season. Big-hitting left-hander
Alex Cairns, who has just signed a contract with Messingham
in the Lincolnshire League, made an unbeaten 84. Jarrod
Leggett continued his fine run of form with 74 not out
and club coach Shawn Flegler made 73. MUCC batting coach
and former Queensland Pura Cup player Daniel Payne stroked
66, Andy Thomas followed up his Frankston heroics with
3/24, Harry Smiles took 3/12 and Will Bull chalked up
an unbeaten half-century on debut.
But the biggest plaudits go to Australian Test team
net bowler Adam Trevitt. Wanting some quality time in
the middle before Christmas, Trevitt doubled his cricket
commitments over two weekends to also open the batting
for the 5ths. And with the 3s on 7/83 yesterday, chasing
196, Trevitt put that batting form to good use to make
68, hitting a boundary off the last ball of the day
to take his team to a two-wicket win.
