University’s strength in depth again proved costly
on Ryder Medal night with Brendan Joseland and Greg Kennedy
narrowly missing out on the awards.
Joseland (pictured) polled 35 votes to finish third in
the Ryder Medal, but with coach Shawn Flegler finishing
11th with 23 votes and former coach Dan Lowery getting
16, there just weren’t enough votes left for BJ.
It was a similar story in the 2s for all-rounder Kennedy
who finished fourth with 18 votes. GK had batsman Brett
Murphy (with 14), all-rounder Scott Sanders (13), off-spinner
Daniel Hibbert (13), State under-17 player Anthony Barton
(11) and regular 1s opener Pat O’Beirne (11) also
dragging votes away.
Thirds captain Gareth Haeberle topped the voting in the
3s while fellow off-spinner Mark Bhattacharyya came ninth
in the 4s count with 12 votes. Sixteen players in the
4s polled votes with batsman Tom Trumble only a vote behind
Bhattacharyya.
The club came third overall in votes received with the
1s and 2s both finishing second overall.
Andrew Martel’s performances in the 5s, where he
scored 426 runs at 71, have been recognised with an invite
to the association awards at the end of the month.
