Two of MUCC’s great club men
and young guns Hugh van Cuylenburg and Nick Williams
(pictured) have been appointed club coach and 1st XI
captain respectively.
Van Cuylenburg, who came close to captaining
the 2nd XI to a flag, said: "It’s a great
honour to coach such a prestigious and successful club.
There is no doubt MUCC has plenty of talent. However,
talent alone is not enough. My challenge is to create
a disciplined, hard-working and honest culture to ensure
our talent is realised."
Williams, whose younger brother Tom
is also at the club, said: "I feel honoured to
be leading a club with a proud cricket history and outstanding
reputation in the community. We can build on the 1st
XI's modern day record and hopefully achieve an era
of dominance in the Premier Cricket competition."
Tim Grant who, along with Van Cuylenburg
and Williams, also has a younger brother at MUCC, is
to be 1st XI Coach and manager of the High Performance
Squad. His goal is to help several players "emerge
for Victorian selection over the next few seasons".
Cricket Director Charles Sutherland says: "The
new structure presents three outstanding MUCC people
to lead the club into a new phase. Their passion and
enthusiasm for University cricket is undeniable. Their
challenge will be to find better ways of doing things,
so we can achieve the breakthroughs in performance we
crave."
Outgoing coach Shawn Flegler, who is moving to Sydney
due to work commitments, won the 1st XI batting award
at the club’s presentation night. Others to win
batting awards were Jarrod Leggett,
Henry Minson, Adam Scambler and Tim Newhouse, who has
moved to Hawarden in North Wales.
Nick Elsmore won the best first-year player trophy and
the 2nd XI bowling award. Ashley Robertson, personality
of the year Tony Sidebottom, Scholars Cross winner Hamish
Bull and fellow spinner Amrit Wijesuriya also took out
bowling honours.
